Beijing, China – Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, has called for the healthy and orderly development of artificial intelligence (AI) in a beneficial, safe, and fair direction.
During a group study session of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Friday, Xi emphasized the importance of leveraging China’s advantages to promote AI innovation. He urged the nation to prioritize application-oriented development and to strengthen self-reliance in key technologies.
“AI is a strategic technology that is transforming how we live and work,” Xi said. “We must achieve breakthroughs in fundamental theories and core technologies to gain a competitive edge in AI.”
He highlighted the need to overcome challenges in areas like high-end chips and foundational software. Xi called for building an independent and controllable AI infrastructure, enhancing innovation through industry-academia-research collaboration, and accelerating the integration of AI into various industries.
Xi also stressed the importance of developing policies to support AI, including intellectual property rights and fiscal measures. He underlined the necessity of promoting AI education at all levels to cultivate high-quality talent.
Addressing concerns about the risks associated with AI, Xi urged the establishment of laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines to ensure AI safety and reliability. He advocated for international cooperation, particularly in helping Global South countries strengthen their technological capacities and bridging the global AI divide.
“AI can serve as a global public good that benefits humanity,” Xi stated. “We should work together to form a global governance framework with broad consensus.”
