Bjiff 2025 Launches diplomat Filmfest to Foster Cultural Exchange

Beijing Launches ‘Diplomat Filmfest’ to Bridge Cultures

Nearly 400 diplomats, filmmakers, and officials from around the world gathered in Beijing on Friday for the opening of the 15th Beijing International Film Festival’s (BJIFF) newest addition—the ‘Diplomat Filmfest.’ This innovative event aims to celebrate cinema as a universal language that fosters global dialogue and cultural exchange.

In his opening remarks, Chen Li, deputy director general of the Beijing Service Bureau for Diplomatic Missions, highlighted the pivotal role of film in diplomacy. “Today, cultural exchange requires mutual effort more than ever,” he stated. Chen expressed hope that the ‘Diplomat Filmfest’ would further promote cultural connections between China and the international community.

Echoing this sentiment, Branko Bulatović, ambassador of Montenegro to China, remarked, “An excellent film is a bridge that connects cultures, eras, and beliefs.” His words underscored the festival’s mission to use cinema as a tool for deeper understanding among nations.

The event also marked the establishment of the International Film Critics Committee under the China Film Critics Association. This committee seeks to foster dialogue among global film critics and to promote Chinese cinema on the world stage.

Another highlight was the unveiling of the Diplomat Filmfest Support System. This platform provides access to over 1,000 films—including features, documentaries, and animations—for diplomatic communities in China, enriching their cultural experiences.

Attendees were treated to a special screening of the documentary “Panda Adventure,” which follows the lives of six giant pandas from birth to retirement. The heartwarming film delighted audiences, especially children, with its touching storytelling.

The festival also featured an exhibition titled “Modern Chengdu Through the Lens,” showcasing the 4,500-year-old city’s unique blend of rich heritage and contemporary vibrancy.

As the ‘Diplomat Filmfest’ continues to evolve, it stands as a vital platform for cross-cultural engagement. Leveraging the power of film, the initiative aims to deepen mutual understanding and meet the cultural needs of the global diplomatic community, fostering appreciation through the universal language of cinema.
