World’s Largest Car Carrier BYD Shenzhen Embarks on Maiden Voyage from China

Taicang Port, China—The world’s largest car carrier, the BYD Shenzhen, has embarked on its maiden voyage from east China’s Jiangsu Province, carrying over 7,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs) destined for Brazil.

The colossal vessel set sail on Sunday evening and is expected to reach Itajai Port in Brazil after more than 30 days at sea. Developed by Chinese automaker BYD, the BYD Shenzhen spans 219 meters in length and 37.7 meters in width, boasting 9,200 standard spaces for vehicles.

This marks BYD’s fourth specialized NEV carrier, all independently built in China by a shipyard under China Merchants Group. The ship incorporates state-of-the-art green technologies, including high-efficiency, energy-saving engines, antifouling coatings, and a Boil-Off Gas (BOG) recondenser to enhance environmental performance and reduce emissions.

The launch signifies a significant step in the Chinese mainland’s commitment to sustainable transportation and its expanding role in global auto exports. As demand for NEVs continues to rise worldwide, vessels like the BYD Shenzhen play a crucial role in meeting international markets’ needs while promoting greener shipping practices.
