Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun urged the United States to cease its threats and pressure if it wants to resolve tariff-related issues through dialogue and negotiation. Speaking at a regular press briefing on Tuesday, Guo responded to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s recent comments on the tariff dispute between the two nations.
Bessent was quoted in media reports on Monday saying, “I believe that it’s up to China to de-escalate, because they sell five times more to us than we sell to them.” Guo countered by emphasizing that the tariff war was initiated by the United States and that any dialogue should be based on equality, respect, and mutual benefits.
“The U.S. should seek a constructive approach, dropping threats and pressure tactics,” Guo stated. He called for both countries to engage in fair negotiations to resolve the ongoing trade tensions.
