BRICS Leaders Stand Together Against Unilateral Trade Moves
The foreign ministers of BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—met in Rio de Janeiro this week, sending a strong message against unilateral trade practices that they say harm the global economy.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi joined his counterparts for the meeting on April 28 and 29. Speaking at a news briefing on Wednesday, Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, emphasized the group’s commitment to multilateralism and free trade.
“The BRICS nations are united in opposing unilateral protectionist measures,” Guo said. “Actions like indiscriminate tariffs and trade barriers disrupt global supply chains and create uncertainty for everyone.”
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, and the ministers reaffirmed their support for the UN’s central role in international affairs. They condemned any attempts to undermine global institutions through unilateral actions.
The leaders called on all countries to work together to defend free trade and strengthen the multilateral trading system. They highlighted the importance of solidarity among nations in the Global South to promote progress and justice.
“By seeking strength through unity, the Global South can bring more stability and certainty to the world,” Guo stressed.
The BRICS meeting showcased the growing influence of emerging economies in shaping a fairer global landscape, a message that resonates with young people across developing nations who aspire for equitable opportunities on the world stage.
