Brics Foreign Ministers Meeting Issues Chairs Statement

BRICS Ministers Unite Against Unilateralism, Champion Global Fairness

The foreign ministers of BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from April 28 to 29. They issued a joint statement emphasizing their united stance against unilateralism and advocating for fair, open global trade.

In the statement, the ministers highlighted the importance of a transparent, inclusive, and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core. They expressed serious concerns over unfair protectionist practices that violate WTO rules, including the misuse of reciprocal tariffs.

“International trade is a key driver for inclusive growth, eliminating hunger and poverty, and fostering sustainable development, especially for countries in the Global South,” the ministers stated.

They reaffirmed their commitment to necessary reforms within the WTO to strengthen its functions and principles, aiming to combat the rise of unilateralism and protectionism. The ministers also reiterated their dedication to multilateralism and adherence to international law, supporting the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.

The BRICS foreign ministers condemned any unilateral attempts to undermine multilateral institutions. They emphasized that all nations should collaborate based on equality and mutual respect to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms.
