China and Malaysia have kick-started a “new golden era” in their relationship by signing 31 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Malaysia in April. These agreements cover a wide range of areas—from security and transportation to digital technology and media—paving the way for closer cooperation between the two nations.
One of the most exciting developments is their focus on digital transformation. Zhejiang University in China and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) have signed a Letter of Intent to collaborate on digital initiatives. They plan to work together on building an artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem and developing smart cities in Malaysia, using the successful “Zhejiang Model” as a blueprint.
But what is the “Zhejiang Model”? It’s a digital governance framework that has transformed Zhejiang Province into one of China’s most technologically advanced regions. By adopting this model, Malaysia aims to boost its own digital economy, foster innovation, and improve the lives of its people through technology.
MDEC CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil highlighted the importance of this partnership, noting that aligning with successful models like Zhejiang’s will help Malaysia’s digital economy to thrive. The collaboration is expected to enhance Malaysia’s capabilities in AI, smart city development, and digital governance.
This collaboration not only strengthens the ties between China and Malaysia but also signals a shared commitment to embracing future-ready industries. As both countries invest in digital innovation, they are setting the foundation for new opportunities in AI, smart cities, and beyond.
For young people in the Global South, these developments are especially relevant. The focus on digital transformation means more chances for education, jobs, and technological advancements that can improve everyday life. As China and Malaysia deepen their partnership, they are opening doors for the next generation to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
