China’s Top Legislator Urges Lawmakers to Embrace New Legal Powers

China’s top legislator Zhao Leji has called on lawmakers to fully implement the newly amended Law on Deputies to the National People’s Congress (NPC) and to the Local People’s Congresses at Various Levels. Speaking at a symposium during the 15th session of the 14th NPC Standing Committee, Zhao emphasized the importance of legislators exercising their powers and fulfilling their duties to better serve the people.

Zhao, who serves as chairman of the 14th NPC Standing Committee and is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, engaged in discussions with lawmakers about the significance of the amended law. He highlighted that the changes, adopted in March during the third session of the 14th NPC, provide stronger legal guarantees for legislators to play their roles effectively.

“Lawmakers should consistently uphold the Party’s leadership in all aspects of their work,” Zhao stated. He encouraged them to actively respond to major public concerns and to perform their duties with the people’s interests at heart.

The symposium provided an opportunity for lawmakers to share insights on implementing the new legal provisions and discussing strategies for enhancing legislative work at all levels.
