Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on BRICS nations to stand firm in upholding global fairness and justice amid rising hegemonism. Speaking at a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers and partner countries in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Wang emphasized the critical role the bloc can play in fostering cooperation and promoting a more equitable world order.
Strengthening Global South Cooperation
The meeting, presided over by Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira, focused on enhancing collaboration among nations in the Global South and reinforcing multilateralism. High-level representatives discussed strategies to address common challenges and boost economic growth.
China’s Commitment to BRICS Development
On the same day, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the headquarters of the BRICS New Development Bank, signaling China’s strong support for the institution. “China looks forward to the bank and the BRICS family advancing together on the path of modernization,” Wang Yi remarked.
Wang Yi’s Three Key Proposals
Wang outlined three main proposals for BRICS nations:
1. Safeguarding the Core Role of the United Nations
Wang urged BRICS countries to advocate for extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits. He called for the protection of the multilateral trading system and the development of a more just and equitable global governance system.
2. Promoting Peaceful Resolution of Disputes
Stressing the importance of security cooperation, Wang encouraged BRICS nations to commit to resolving disputes through peaceful means. He highlighted China’s willingness to work with the international community, particularly BRICS members, to build consensus on politically resolving the Ukraine crisis.
Additionally, Wang noted BRICS countries’ support for the Gaza recovery and reconstruction plan endorsed by Arab and Islamic countries, emphasizing the principle of “The Palestinians governing Palestine.”
3. Fostering an Open and Cooperative International Environment
Wang called for BRICS members to keep their doors open to partner countries, facilitating deeper integration and full participation in cooperative initiatives.
Collective Commitment to Multilateralism
Foreign ministers at the meeting agreed on the urgency of upholding multilateralism amidst geopolitical tensions and rising protectionism. They stressed adherence to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and the importance of safeguarding the UN’s central role in the international system.
Expressing concern over the impact of “reciprocal tariffs,” the ministers warned that such measures could disrupt global supply chains and increase uncertainty in the international landscape.
