At a pivotal meeting in Brasilia on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on BRICS nations to strengthen their unity and cooperation to become a steadfast force in safeguarding the rights and interests of developing countries.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, addressed the 15th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisers and High Representatives on National Security. He emphasized that in the evolving global landscape, an increasing number of countries are turning to BRICS for leadership and seeking to join its ranks.
“Adopting a transactional approach in international politics and turning global trade into a weapon will only deepen mistrust among nations and threaten global security,” Wang stated. “Concession leads nowhere; unity is where hope lies.”
He urged BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—to defend the right to development, champion unity and cooperation, and uphold multilateralism. Wang stressed the importance of standing firmly against unilateralism and safeguarding the development rights of all developing nations.
Other representatives at the meeting echoed Wang’s sentiments, agreeing that BRICS nations should build consensus and jointly oppose all forms of bullying, interventionism, and unfair trade practices. They called for adherence to multilateral principles, defending the common interests of the Global South, and collaborating to build a multipolar world characterized by peace, security, fairness, and justice.
