China has announced a three-month nationwide campaign to tackle the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
On Wednesday, the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission issued a circular detailing the initiative, which aims to strengthen the regulation of AI applications and content.
The campaign will roll out in two phases. The first phase focuses on removing unauthorized AI applications and enhancing the oversight of AI-generated content. Online platforms will be encouraged to improve their capabilities to identify and prevent violations.
The second phase targets specific issues, such as the use of AI to spread rumors, misinformation, obscene content, impersonation, and “internet trolling.” Authorities will work to eliminate illegal and harmful content and penalize offenders, including relevant accounts, multi-channel network (MCN) organizations, and online platforms.
This move reflects China’s commitment to ensuring that AI technologies are used responsibly and ethically, safeguarding the online environment for all users.
