China’s Massive Wetland Preservation: 903 Parks Created in 20 Years

Over the past two decades, China has made significant strides in environmental conservation by establishing 903 national wetland parks. These parks now protect 2.4 million hectares of wetlands, providing crucial habitats for key wildlife species.

At an international seminar held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, Yan Zhen, vice head of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA), emphasized China’s ongoing commitment to wetland conservation. “We have long prioritized protecting our wetlands and will continue to make concerted efforts,” Yan stated.

China’s total wetland area now stands at 56.35 million hectares, with 82 wetlands designated as internationally important—ranking among the highest globally, according to NFGA data. The country’s focus on ecological protection and restoration has led to the successful rehabilitation of 300,000 hectares of wetlands under the national wetland conservation plan.

In addition to domestic efforts, China is promoting international cooperation in wetland preservation. The establishment of the International Mangrove Center is one such initiative contributing to global conservation efforts.

Looking ahead, the NFGA plans to enhance the holistic protection of wetland ecosystems, launching major projects in key areas such as the Yangtze and Yellow river basins. The administration also aims to strengthen international cooperation and actively participate in global ecological governance.
