Shanghai Launches International Consumption Season 2025 to Boost Global Trade
Shanghai has officially launched the International Consumption Season 2025 alongside the sixth Shanghai 5-5 Shopping Festival, aiming to expand foreign markets and attract more investment. The event, held on Thursday, was jointly organized by the Ministry of Commerce, China Media Group (CMG), and the Shanghai Municipal Government.
Sheng Qiuping, Vice Minister of Commerce, urged international consumer cities to align with the central government’s policies to stimulate consumption and set new benchmarks. “By proactively leveraging various policies, we can upgrade product consumption and lead the way in expanding the market,” Sheng emphasized at the opening ceremony.
Projections indicate that by 2024, the total retail sales of consumer goods in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Tianjin, and Chongqing will account for about one-eighth of the national total. Additionally, imported consumer goods are expected to comprise over half of the country’s total imports.
Highlighting the importance of culture and tourism in economic growth, Wang Xiaozhen, Vice President of CMG, noted that Chinese cinema has achieved record-breaking box office revenues, making it the largest market globally. “We should harness media brand resources and activate market potential by integrating ideas, art, and technology into our communication strategies,” Wang suggested.
Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, addressed the event via video link. Marking the 25th anniversary of the Shanghai-Dubai partnership, he expressed hopes to strengthen collaborative ties. “We are committed to making Dubai the most attractive, sustainable, and high-quality city to live in. Let’s work together to promote mutual prosperity and development between our two global cities,” he said.
