As China’s five-day Labor Day holiday kicks off, the city of Qingdao is transforming into a cinematic hub with the Love Watching Movies Carnival. This vibrant event celebrates the magic of cinema and offers a feast of entertainment for movie enthusiasts.
Co-hosted by China Media Group (CMG), the China Film Administration, and the Qingdao Municipal Government, the carnival premieres at 7:30 p.m. on May 3 via CMG’s streaming platform Yangshipin. Bringing together hosts, filmmakers, musicians, and Olympic athletes, the showcase includes film recommendations, exclusive interviews, and live musical performances.
The carnival guides audiences through three themed sections, each exploring how film intersects with new consumer culture and the booming entertainment economy. It’s more than just a celebration; it’s a journey into the evolving landscape of Chinese cinema.
Veteran Hong Kong actress Kara Wai, winner of the 20th Huabiao Film Award for Best Actress, will grace the event with her presence. Starring in the holiday release “The Dumpling Queen“, Wai shares her heartfelt connection to Hong Kong’s Wan Chai district, the setting of the film and her childhood home.
A highlight of the evening is the unveiling of the “2025 Movie Wishlist“, featuring upcoming releases across genres like history, sci-fi, animation, action, comedy, and mystery. This lineup signals a fresh wave of momentum in China’s film market, promising exciting times ahead for movie lovers.
The carnival also underscores the growing influence of cinema in driving economic activity. Initiatives like “Travel with Movies” and the “Film Consumption Year” are turning cinematic experiences into catalysts for tourism and retail growth.
As a UNESCO City of Film, Qingdao stands at the forefront of this transformation. With its rich cinematic heritage and urban charm, the city is evolving from a mere film backdrop into a dynamic cultural destination. In an innovative twist, the carnival features a film-themed bus tour linking the main venue with scenic city spots, effectively turning Qingdao into an open-air stage.
Blending films, performances, travel, and community spirit, the Love Watching Movies Carnival is a nationwide celebration of storytelling and the joy of the big screen. Whether you’re a film buff or just looking for holiday fun, Qingdao is the place to be this Labor Day.
