California Offers open Hand to China Amid Trade War Says Governor

California Governor Extends Open Hand to China Amid Trade Tensions

California Governor Gavin Newsom has affirmed his commitment to strengthening trade ties with China, emphasizing that the state remains open for business despite ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China.

In an online interview with Nikkei Asia, Governor Newsom described California as a “stable partner” that has “extended an open hand” to China and other global trading partners. He highlighted the importance of mutual cooperation, stating that “global trade is not a zero-sum game” and that nations are fundamentally interdependent.

California, the largest state economy in the U.S., has established a series of cooperation agreements with China at the state, city, and county levels. During his visit to China in 2023, Governor Newsom expanded the state’s engagement, aiming to foster deeper economic and cultural connections.

“Our relationship with China is crucial for the prosperity of California,” Newsom said. “We are committed to building bridges, not walls, and to promoting shared growth and innovation.”

Governor Newsom expressed concern over the impact of trade tensions on California’s economy, noting that restrictive trade policies have affected industries ranging from technology to agriculture. California’s Silicon Valley tech companies, which have deeply integrated supply chains and markets in Asia, have felt the strain of these tensions.

“Trade policies that hinder our global partnerships not only affect large corporations but also small businesses and communities across our state,” he remarked. “We must work towards solutions that benefit all parties involved.”

California has been proactive in addressing these challenges. The state filed a lawsuit against the federal government, challenging the use of emergency powers to impose extensive tariffs, arguing that such measures threaten California’s economic well-being.

Despite these hurdles, California continues to thrive economically. With a nominal GDP that rivals leading global economies, the state stands as a testament to the power of international collaboration.

“California’s success is built on diversity and openness,” Governor Newsom concluded. “By embracing global partnerships, we can create a more prosperous future for all.”
