Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., Xie Feng, has called for equality, respect, and reciprocity in trade discussions between China and the United States. Criticizing recent U.S. tariff hikes, Xie emphasized that China does not seek a trade war but is prepared to defend its legitimate rights and the international trade order.
Speaking at an open house event showcasing northwest China’s Gansu Province, Xie stated, “In today’s global economy, no country can thrive alone. Building barriers only blocks the flow of shared growth.” He highlighted how the United States has greatly benefited from global trade, allowing Americans to enjoy affordable goods from around the world while leading in finance, technology, and services.
Addressing concerns over trade imbalances, Xie remarked that the China-U.S. economic relationship is both balanced and mutually beneficial. He cited that in 2022, the sales revenue of U.S.-owned enterprises in China exceeded those of Chinese-owned enterprises in the U.S. by over $400 billion.
“We are not intimidated by a trade war,” Xie asserted. “We are defending not only our own legitimate rights and interests but also the order of international trade.” He reaffirmed China’s commitment to steady growth and greater openness to the world, noting that China remains the world’s second-largest consumer market with a significant middle-income population.
Despite global challenges, China’s GDP grew by 5.4% in the first quarter, and exports rose by 6.9%. Xie pointed out that China’s network of global partners continues to expand, with more foreign visitors traveling and shopping in China, facilitated by visa-free transit and instant tax refunds.
Foreign visits to China reached 64.88 million last year, an increase of 82.9%. During the recent five-day May Day holiday week, inbound tourism bookings surged by 173%, reflecting China’s growing appeal as a global destination.
