Wildlife enthusiasts were thrilled to spot a rare pair of corsac foxes foraging on a grassland in Ergun City, located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of north China.
The corsac foxes, known for their solitary nature, seldom move in pairs. The duo, captured on video, consists of a male and a female—believed to be a new couple starting their journey together.
Listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2008, the corsac fox’s status improved to ‘least concern’ in 2014 following conservation efforts. Despite this, sightings remain uncommon, making this recent encounter particularly special.
Measuring between 50 to 60 centimeters in length and weighing about 2 to 3 kilograms, the corsac fox holds the title of the smallest fox species in China. These petite canids inhabit grasslands, deserts, and semi-deserts, and primarily feed on rodents.
The sighting of this corsac fox pair not only highlights the rich biodiversity of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region but also underscores the importance of continued conservation efforts to protect these unique creatures.
