China and Russia Unite to Honor WWII Legacy through Cultural Exchange

China Media Group (CMG) and the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK) hosted a cultural exchange event on Wednesday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War.

The event featured congratulatory letters from the presidents of both China and Russia, highlighting the importance of the occasion. Shen Haixiong, vice minister of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and president of CMG, emphasized the role of media in strengthening the friendship between the two nations.

“CMG will build a cultural bridge connecting the hearts of the two countries with a series of high-quality productions,” Shen said. He expressed hope that these efforts would deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination between China and Russia in the new era.

Oleg Dobrodeev, CEO of VGTRK, praised the positive progress and remarkable results of media cooperation between the two countries. He stated that VGTRK and CMG would enhance collaboration in content exchange, technological innovation, and personnel exchanges, fostering mutual understanding and friendship between the people.

During the event, the creative team behind the China-Russia co-produced film “Red Silk” shared their experiences. The movie, which premiered in Russia on February 20, is set to debut in Chinese theaters this September.

The 2025 China Film Festival in Russia was also launched, offering Russian audiences a chance to gain deeper insights into China through acclaimed films like “My Country, My Parents”, “Detective Chinatown 1900”, and “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru”.

In addition, CMG and VGTRK introduced a peace-themed initiative, inviting people from both countries to contribute historical relics, documentary images, and other memorabilia to collectively portray a shared vision of peace and a hopeful future.

Filming also began for the China-Russia co-produced documentary “The Great Victory – China’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression Through the Lens of a Soviet Photographer”. The film explores the experiences of Soviet photojournalist Roman Kalman in China and showcases the invaluable images he captured, illustrating the epic history of China’s resistance during World War II.

VGTRK presented CMG with rare historical footage from China’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, preserved by the Russian State Archives. Over 200 individuals from various sectors, including politics, economy, culture, media, and education, attended the event.
