China Warns Philippines Against Offending Its Core Interest

China Issues Stern Warning to Philippines Over South China Sea Tensions

Beijing, China — China’s Ministry of National Defense has issued a stern warning to the Philippines, urging it to stop actions that Beijing perceives as provocations in the South China Sea and regarding Taiwan-related matters.

During a press conference on Thursday, Defense Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang addressed concerns about the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong appearing in waters north of the Philippines amid recent joint exercises between the Philippines and the United States. He also responded to comments from the Philippine Navy about potential joint drills involving Philippine and Taiwan troops.

“The Shandong aircraft carrier task group was conducting its annual training mission in relevant waters to further test and enhance its integrated combat capabilities,” Zhang stated. “This is in accordance with international law and common practice and is not directed at any specific country or target.”

Zhang accused certain individuals in the Philippines of colluding with external forces to “stir up the sea” for selfish gains, which he said undermines peace and stability in the South China Sea region. He cautioned against attempts to “play with fire” on issues concerning Taiwan.

“We sternly warn the Philippine side to cease its infringements and provocations, and stop offending China’s core interests in any form,” Zhang declared. He added that China will continue to take “resolute and forceful measures” to defend its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.
