In a significant move to strengthen their economic ties, Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao met with Russian Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov in Moscow on Wednesday. The discussions centered around pressing economic issues, including the United States’ imposition of “reciprocal tariffs” and strategies to deepen bilateral trade and investment.
Wang Wentao reaffirmed China’s firm opposition to the U.S. government’s unilateral tariff actions, stating that China has taken robust countermeasures. He emphasized that China’s stance remains steadfast: the nation is committed to safeguarding its developmental interests and upholding international fairness, justice, and the rules-based global trade order.
“China will continue to defend its rightful development interests,” Wang declared, highlighting the recent agreement to hold high-level economic and trade talks with the United States in Switzerland.
The Chinese minister also underscored the growing strength of the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership. “Our bilateral economic and trade ties are maintaining strong momentum,” Wang noted. He called for both countries to fully utilize the upgraded investment protection agreement to foster a more transparent and equitable business environment, thus promoting high-quality economic cooperation.
Maxim Reshetnikov expressed enthusiasm for the burgeoning cooperation between China and Russia. “Our collaboration is mutually beneficial and serves the fundamental interests of both nations,” he said. Reshetnikov emphasized that their joint efforts are not aimed at any third party. He encouraged seizing new opportunities to expand two-way investment, deepen industrial collaboration, and foster new drivers of growth.
