Excitement filled the air as the Chinese Navy’s frigate Xuchang opened its decks to the public at Singapore’s IMDEX Asia 2025 on Thursday. Over 1,000 visitors, including students and foreign military personnel, eagerly boarded the 4,000-tonne vessel docked at Changi Naval Base.
The Xuchang, a Type 054A guided missile frigate, stood as a floating ambassador alongside the Type 082II minesweeper Chishui at one of Asia’s most influential defense exhibitions. The event attracted over 100 companies worldwide, showcasing the latest advancements in maritime technology, from artificial intelligence to ship power systems.
Guided tours on the Xuchang offered an immersive experience, blending military might with cultural diplomacy. Sailors led visitors from stern to bow, sharing the rich history of the People’s Liberation Army Navy amidst displays of missile systems and radar equipment.
“I was absolutely overwhelmed,” exclaimed a Chinese student studying in Singapore. “The ship is much larger than I imagined, and I’ve seen weapons I never knew existed!”
The cultural exchanges didn’t stop there. At a special deck reception, sailors showcased traditional Chinese arts, performing Zheng music, Tai Chi, and the mesmerizing face-changing act from Sichuan Opera.
“I experienced so much cultural diversity,” said a Singaporean naval soldier. “It’s fortunate to be here and witness this firsthand.”
Another visitor, a seaman from Singapore of Chinese descent, shared his excitement: “I felt truly welcomed. I made a few friends on board, and as someone who appreciates Chinese culture, it was a fantastic experience.”
Throughout the exhibition, the Chinese Navy participated in various activities, including professional exchanges and receptions. Their openness and cooperative spirit left a lasting impression on attendees, highlighting a commitment to fostering international maritime collaboration.
Commissioned in 2017, the Xuchang has participated in major training exercises and maritime escort operations. Capable of sea assault, air defense, and anti-missile missions, the frigate represents China’s domestically developed naval prowess.
IMDEX Asia 2025 concluded on Thursday, leaving visitors inspired by the technological advancements and cultural connections forged during the event. The presence of vessels like the Xuchang underlined the importance of international dialogue in maritime defense and cooperation.
