China and Switzerland Unite to Boost Free Trade and Open Markets
In a bid to strengthen global trade ties, China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng met with Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter and Vice President Guy Parmelin in Geneva on Friday. Amid a complex international landscape, the two nations pledged to work together to safeguard free trade and open markets.
He Lifeng emphasized the importance of enhancing communication between China and Switzerland to face global challenges head-on. He called for accelerated talks to upgrade the Sino-Swiss Free Trade Agreement (FTA), aiming for substantial progress in the near future. “By working together, we can contribute to global peace, stability, and economic prosperity,” he said.
President Keller-Sutter expressed Switzerland’s willingness to collaborate closely with China, especially as the two countries celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. She highlighted plans to jointly host the Switzerland-China Year of Culture and Tourism, fostering exchanges at all levels and deepening practical cooperation in multiple fields.
Vice President Parmelin reiterated Switzerland’s support for multilateralism and free trade. He conveyed Switzerland’s readiness to accelerate negotiations on upgrading the FTA, benefiting businesses and people from both sides. “Together, we can safeguard global industrial and supply chains,” Parmelin stated.
This renewed commitment between China and Switzerland signals a positive step toward bolstering international trade and cooperation, setting the stage for deeper bilateral ties in the years to come.
