Chinese President Xi Jinping recently completed a significant visit to Russia, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War. The visit aimed to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Russia and promote international equity and justice.
During the four-day trip, President Xi and President Putin engaged in extensive discussions, spending nearly 10 hours addressing issues of mutual concern. One of the key outcomes was the signing of a joint statement on deepening the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership for a new era.
“Our nations have agreed to continue expanding cooperation in various fields, including economic, trade, and energy sectors,” said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. “This commitment counters the global trend of protectionism and reinforces the foundation of our bilateral relations.”
On international matters, President Xi emphasized China’s support for efforts conducive to peace regarding the Ukraine crisis. “It’s important to consider the legitimate security concerns of all countries and address the root causes of conflicts,” he noted.
The visit also underscored the importance of preserving the post-World War II international order. By attending the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, President Xi demonstrated China’s dedication to upholding a correct historical perspective and working with other nations to maintain global stability.
Amid the complex international landscape, both leaders agreed on the necessity of defending the United Nations-centered international system and the international order underpinned by international law.
President Xi also addressed the Taiwan question, reaffirming that Taiwan’s return to China is a result of World War II’s victorious outcome and an integral part of the post-war international order. “No matter how the situation evolves, the historical trend toward China’s ultimate reunification is unstoppable,” he stated.
In addition to his meetings with Russian officials, President Xi held discussions with leaders from various countries who attended the celebrations. He met with leaders from Myanmar, Cuba, Venezuela, Serbia, and Slovakia, reaching broad consensus on supporting each other, defending multilateralism, and opposing power politics and bullying.
During his meeting with Myanmar’s leader, Min Aung Hlaing, President Xi expressed support for Myanmar in safeguarding its sovereignty and advancing its domestic political agenda. In talks with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, he emphasized that Latin American and Caribbean nations are sovereign and independent, not anyone’s backyard.
The trip highlighted China’s commitment to fostering global partnerships and promoting a fair international order. As global challenges continue to emerge, the strengthened ties between China and Russia signal a shared dedication to peace, development, and cooperation.
