Chinese Colombian Foreign Ministers Meet in Beijing

China and Colombia Strengthen Ties with Belt and Road Initiative

On Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Colombian Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia in Beijing, marking a new chapter in the 45-year diplomatic relationship between China and Colombia.

During their meeting, Wang Yi congratulated Colombia on becoming the new rotating president of the China-CELAC Forum, an important platform for cooperation between China and Latin American and Caribbean states. He highlighted China’s long-term commitment to strengthening ties with Colombia.

“We see great potential in our partnership,” Wang Yi said. “As we commemorate our 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations, we are eager to collaborate under the Belt and Road Initiative.”

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a global development strategy launched by China, aiming to enhance regional connectivity through infrastructure projects and economic cooperation across Asia, Africa, Europe, and now Latin America.

Laura Sarabia expressed her appreciation for China’s support in Colombia’s peace efforts and economic diversification. “Joining the Belt and Road Initiative is a significant opportunity for Colombia,” she stated. “We are excited about the tangible benefits this collaboration can bring, and we look forward to increased Chinese investment in our country.”

This meeting symbolizes a growing alliance between nations of the Global South, focusing on mutual development and prosperity. The partnership promises new opportunities for young people, fostering cultural exchange and economic growth across continents.
