China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, urged for stronger solidarity and cooperation with Latin American and Caribbean countries during the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC Forum on Tuesday. He emphasized China’s commitment to working closely with the region to build a brighter future together.
Wang highlighted that President Xi Jinping and leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean have reached significant agreements on strengthening ties, setting a strategic path for long-term collaboration. “China is ready to join hands with LAC countries to implement our shared vision through unity and mutual benefit,” Wang said.
He outlined five key areas where China hopes to deepen cooperation with Latin American and Caribbean nations:
- Mutual Respect for Core Interests: Wang affirmed China’s support for LAC countries in preserving their independence and choosing development paths suited to their unique circumstances. He stressed the importance of respecting each other’s core interests and sovereignty.
- Enhanced Economic and Trade Cooperation: Emphasizing the opportunities under the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Development Initiative, Wang expressed China’s willingness to strengthen economic ties. He announced the implementation of 66 billion yuan ($9.18 billion) in credit lines to CELAC members and encouraged collaboration in emerging industries.
- Strengthening Peace and Security: Wang voiced support for efforts to maintain regional peace and stability. He proposed joint initiatives on global security, including cooperation on cybersecurity, anti-terrorism, anti-money laundering, and disaster prevention.
- Cultural and People-to-People Exchanges: Recognizing the importance of cultural ties, Wang called for increased exchanges between universities, think tanks, media, and local governments to foster mutual understanding and support among the people.
- Upholding International Fairness and Justice: As the world marks significant anniversaries of global milestones, Wang urged joint efforts to promote true multilateralism. He emphasized the need to reform global governance, safeguard the United Nations-centered international system, and enhance the voice of developing countries.
Wang’s remarks come amid global uncertainties, highlighting China’s commitment to partnering with Latin America and the Caribbean to navigate shared challenges and opportunities.
