In a delightful turn for nature enthusiasts, the rare and enchanting pheasant-tailed jacanas, also known as “fairies of the ripples,” have made a home in the lotus ponds of Xianghu Wetland Park in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. These graceful birds, sometimes called “water phoenixes,” are under second-class national protection in China.
The arrival of these jacanas to breed and raise their offspring is a testament to the thriving and improving ecological conditions of Xianghu Lake. The wetland park’s lush lotus ponds provide the perfect habitat for these birds, known for their striking plumage and elongated toes that allow them to elegantly walk on floating vegetation.
“Seeing these birds here is a sign that our conservation efforts are paying off,” said a local wildlife observer. “It’s wonderful to witness nature flourishing.”
The presence of the pheasant-tailed jacanas not only adds to the biodiversity of the region but also offers a unique opportunity for young people to connect with nature and learn about the importance of environmental preservation.
