Museums across the Chinese mainland welcomed a record 1.49 billion visits in 2024, showcasing a growing public interest in cultural heritage and history. The National Cultural Heritage Administration released the data on Sunday, coinciding with International Museum Day celebrations at the Grand Canal Museum in Beijing.
By the end of 2024, the Chinese mainland boasted 7,046 museums, marking an increase of 213 from the previous year. This equates to one museum for every 200,000 people nationwide, emphasizing the accessibility of cultural experiences. Impressively, over 90 percent of these museums offer free admission to the public.
Over the past year, museums across the country hosted more than 43,000 exhibitions and 511,000 educational activities. These initiatives have not only enriched the cultural landscape but also fostered educational growth among visitors of all ages.
The surge in museum visits reflects a wider trend of engagement with China’s rich history and diverse cultures. As more people explore these institutions, the emphasis on preserving and sharing cultural heritage continues to strengthen.
