In a recent phone call, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the importance of China and Germany standing together against unilateralism and protectionism. Wang Yi highlighted that the cooperation between China and Germany extends beyond bilateral relations, significantly impacting global economic development and strategic stability.
Congratulating Wadephul on his new role, Wang Yi expressed confidence that Germany will firmly adhere to the one-China principle, noting that the Taiwan question is a core interest of China. He urged both nations to prevent any actions that could undermine their normal cooperation under the guise of “de-risking.”
This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU). Wang Yi expressed hope that Germany would play an active role in enhancing China-EU ties through high-quality China-Germany cooperation. He also called for a prompt resolution to the anti-subsidy case involving Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs), encouraging the EU to work collaboratively with China.
The Chinese Foreign Minister emphasized the need for both countries to advocate free trade, maintain global industrial and supply chain stability, practice true multilateralism, and uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core.
German Foreign Minister Wadephul stated that the new German federal government places great importance on relations with China and is committed to pursuing an active policy towards Beijing. Acknowledging Germany’s leading role within the EU, he expressed readiness to resolve differences through dialogue and consultation, supporting EU-China negotiations on issues like Chinese-made EVs.
On the Ukraine crisis, both sides exchanged views. Wang Yi reiterated China’s commitment to promoting peace talks and supporting a fair, lasting, and binding peace agreement through direct dialogue. Wadephul expressed hope that China would leverage its influence to promote a ceasefire and help end the crisis promptly.
