When people think of Guilin, the breathtaking landscapes and serene rivers often come to mind. But beyond its famous scenery, Guilin in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is quietly showcasing remarkable economic resilience through its thriving trade industries.
Rising Trade Amid Global Challenges
In the first half of 2023, Guilin’s total foreign trade reached 11.39 billion yuan (approximately $1.6 billion), marking an 11.5% year-on-year increase. Exports amounted to 10.52 billion yuan ($1.47 billion), up by 13.9%, according to recent government reports. While tourism remains a cornerstone, these figures highlight Guilin’s growing influence in global markets.
Monk Fruit: Sweet Success from Yongfu County
In Yongfu County, the humble monk fruit, known locally as luohan guo, is making a significant impact on the global stage. Traditionally used in Chinese medicine for its soothing properties, monk fruit has become a sought-after natural sweetener worldwide.
Lan Fusheng, chairman of Jifusi (also known as Monk Fruit Corp), leads one of the region’s top monk fruit enterprises. Despite challenges like fluctuating international tariffs, Lan remains optimistic. “We’ve weathered trade tensions before,” he shared. “Our deep understanding of the market helps us navigate these storms.”
With a growing global focus on healthier lifestyles, monk fruit sweeteners have found a niche, especially in markets like the United States. Recognizing the risks of over-reliance on a single market, Jifusi has diversified its reach. “In 2014, nearly all our sales were to the U.S.,” Lan explained. “Now, we’ve expanded globally, reducing dependence and strengthening our resilience.”
Lipu City: Hanging Tough in Global Trade
Lipu City, known as China’s “hanger capital,” produces over 4 billion hangers annually. Home to more than 300 companies, Lipu’s hanger industry plays a vital role both domestically and internationally. Despite global trade uncertainties, local businesses have adapted and thrived.
“We’ve invested in automation and innovation,” said Mao Huilin, a general manager at a leading hanger company. “By improving our processes, we’re less affected by market shifts.” This proactive approach has ensured Lipu’s hangers remain competitive worldwide.
Industry veteran Mo Peng emphasized preparation over reaction. “The real challenge isn’t the trade tensions; it’s whether we’re ready for them,” he noted. “Our clients value our quality and reliability. These challenges have actually strengthened our partnerships.”
Embracing the Future with Confidence
Business leaders in Guilin’s counties are not just producers; they’re strategic thinkers attuned to the ebb and flow of global commerce. “We’ve seen companies come and go,” Mo shared. “That’s why we’re cautious and focused on diversification.”
For entrepreneurs like Liang Xiaoyan, deputy general manager of Sengleng Bio, challenges are opportunities in disguise. “We don’t see trade conflicts as hardships,” she told us. “They’re chances to explore new markets and innovate. If one door closes, we’ll find another path.”
Guilin’s story is one of quiet determination and adaptability. While its natural beauty continues to inspire, it’s the resilience and ingenuity of its people that are carving out a new legacy—a city not just of scenic wonders but of unstoppable trade triumphs.
