China has expressed strong opposition to recent sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) on Chinese enterprises. The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Mao Ning voiced the government’s stance during a regular press briefing on Wednesday.
“We firmly oppose the EU’s unreasonable sanctions against Chinese enterprises,” Mao Ning stated. “China has always opposed unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law and are not authorized by the United Nations Security Council.”
The EU and the UK announced a new round of sanctions against Russia, which included Chinese companies in the sanctions list. Mao Ning highlighted China’s consistent position on the Ukraine crisis, emphasizing that China has been committed to promoting peace talks and has not provided lethal weapons to any party involved in the conflict.
“We urge the EU to abandon its double standards on economic and trade cooperation with Russia,” Mao said. “The EU should stop undermining the legitimate interests of Chinese firms. China will take necessary measures to safeguard our legitimate rights and interests.”
The spokesperson’s remarks come amid rising tensions over international responses to the Ukraine crisis and highlight China’s emphasis on neutrality and adherence to international law in addressing global conflicts.
