High above the lush landscapes of Tianzhu Mountain in Anqing, Anhui Province, a group of extraordinary individuals risk their lives daily to preserve the mountain’s natural beauty. For the past 20 years, more than 100 sanitation workers, led by the dedicated 54-year-old Tu Yousheng, have tackled the daunting task of cleaning litter and retrieving lost items from the mountain’s sheer 1,000-meter cliffs.
From May 6 to 18 this year, their courageous efforts once again captured the public’s attention. Known as the mountain’s “beauticians,” these workers rappel down vertiginous cliffs, armed with only ropes and sheer determination. Over two decades, Tu has descended a staggering 2,800 kilometers—the equivalent of traveling from Beijing to Urumqi—ensuring that the scenic peaks remain pristine for the countless visitors who flock to Tianzhu Mountain.
“Every piece of litter we remove is a step towards preserving this natural wonder,” Tu shares humbly. The team’s hands are hardened with calluses, and their clothes are often soaked with sweat. Yet, they persist, undeterred by the dangers of their work. Their silent dedication not only safeguards the environment but also sets an inspiring example of commitment and respect for nature.
The cliffside cleaners embody a spirit of selflessness and perseverance. They remind us that maintaining the beauty of our world’s treasures requires continual effort and care. As visitors gaze upon the breathtaking vistas of Tianzhu Mountain, they may not see these unsung heroes—but their impact is felt in every clean trail and unspoiled view.
