Yashipu Village in Tunchang County, Hainan Province, is bustling with activity as villagers prepare to harvest fragrant zongzi leaves ahead of the Dragon Boat Festival. Known as the “Zongzi Leaf Village,” Yashipu cultivates approximately 45 hectares of zongzi leaves beneath towering rubber trees, yielding an annual harvest of around six million leaves.
These leaves, prized for their flexibility, rich aroma, and large size, are essential for wrapping zongzi—a traditional rice dumpling enjoyed during the festival. The demand for Yashipu’s high-quality leaves soars during this time, often outstripping supply.
Over the past decade, the village has transformed its local industry, tailoring the cultivation of zongzi leaves to its unique environment. This shift has paid off tremendously, with villagers seeing their average annual income increase six-fold. The success of the zongzi leaf industry has paved the way for prosperity, turning Yashipu into a model of agricultural innovation.
“Our zongzi leaves are sought after all year, but the Dragon Boat Festival is our busiest season,” said a local villager. “We’re proud that our hard work contributes to the celebration of this important tradition.”
