Hkust Welcomes Harvards International Students Following Us Ban

HKUST Opens Doors to Harvard’s International Students After US Ban

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has announced it will offer unconditional admission to international students affected by the recent US government ban on Harvard University enrolling international students. In a statement issued on May 23, HKUST extended invitations to all international undergraduates and postgraduates currently enrolled at Harvard, as well as those with admission offers, to continue their studies at the university.

HKUST has pledged to prioritize application reviews and credit transfers to ensure a seamless transition for these students. The university is also providing tailored support, including visa assistance and housing accommodations. A dedicated task force has been established to oversee the process and address any concerns.

On the same day, Hong Kong Secretary for Education Dr Choi Yuk-lin expressed her support for HKUST’s initiative. She encouraged outstanding students from around the world to consider studying in the Hong Kong region. Dr Choi noted that the Education Bureau has urged local universities to facilitate admissions for eligible students and is collaborating with the Harvard Club of Hong Kong to provide additional assistance.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning also addressed the issue, emphasizing the mutual benefits of China-US educational cooperation. She reiterated China’s opposition to politicizing academic exchanges, cautioning that such actions could harm the international image of the United States. Mao Ning affirmed China’s commitment to safeguarding the legitimate rights of Chinese students and scholars abroad.

“Education should serve as a bridge for mutual understanding and friendship between nations,” Mao Ning stated. “We hope all countries will create favorable conditions for international students to pursue their studies.”

The move by HKUST highlights the university’s dedication to academic inclusion and support for the global student community amidst geopolitical tensions.
