Discovering Kunqu Opera: Clowning Around in Kunshan’s Timeless Tradition

Kunshan, a rapidly developing city in eastern China, holds a secret that dates back over six centuries. Beneath its modern skyline lies the birthplace of Kunqu Opera, one of China’s oldest and most revered art forms.

Our journey begins with a visit to a traditional theater, where three talented Kunqu performers welcome us into their world. Dressed in elaborate costumes and adorned with intricate makeup, they embody characters that have graced the stage for generations.

“Kunqu Opera is more than just music and drama; it’s a window into our history and culture,” one performer shares. “Every movement, every note, tells a story passed down through time.”

They introduce us to the various roles within Kunqu Opera, each with its own unique style and significance. From the dignified “Sheng” (male roles) to the graceful “Dan” (female roles), the performers demonstrate the precise gestures and vocals that define this classical art.

The highlight of our visit is the transformation of our host into the “Chou,” the clown character from the classic play “Fifteen Strings of Cash.” With the help of the performers, he dons the colorful costume and makeup, embodying the mischievous and comedic spirit of the role.

Laughs and applause fill the room as he attempts the character’s signature moves, bringing joy to both the audience and our newfound Kunqu friends.

“It’s incredible to step into a tradition that’s been alive for 600 years,” our host reflects. “I now understand why Kunqu Opera is treasured not just here in Kunshan, but across China.”

As we leave the theater, the melodies of Kunqu linger in our minds—a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that continues to thrive amidst the modern landscape of Kunshan.

For young audiences seeking to connect with history while embracing the present, Kunqu Opera offers a captivating bridge between the old and the new.
