Top Political Advisor Calls for Cultural Unity Across Taiwan Straits

China’s top political advisor, Wang Huning, has called for strengthened cultural cooperation across the Taiwan Straits to promote Chinese culture.

Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, met with guests from Taiwan in Beijing on Tuesday during the second Cross-Straits Chinese Culture Summit.

He emphasized that Chinese culture is the root and soul shared by people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. “We should uphold cultural confidence and jointly carry forward the spirit of Chinese culture,” Wang said. He urged both sides to shoulder historical responsibility and unite efforts for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Wang called for increased cultural exchanges, enhanced cooperation across various sectors, and a deeper spiritual alignment between compatriots on both sides. He also stressed the importance of promoting the national spirit with patriotism at its core.

Highlighting the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s recovery, Wang urged adherence to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, and resolute opposition to “Taiwan independence.”

The guests from Taiwan, including Hung Hsiu-chu, former chairperson of the Kuomintang, expressed pride and unwavering confidence in Chinese culture. They expressed a desire for compatriots across the Straits to uphold the one-China principle, oppose “Taiwan independence,” strengthen cultural exchanges, and work together toward national reunification and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
