China and Pacific Islands Forge Five-Point Plan for Cooperation
Wang Yi, China’s Foreign Minister and member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, announced a significant five-point consensus with Pacific Island countries during the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Wednesday.
Speaking alongside Kiribati’s President and Foreign Minister Taneti Maamau, Wang Yi highlighted the outcomes of in-depth discussions aimed at advancing cooperation and addressing international and regional issues of common concern.
Five Key Areas of Consensus
- Equality Among Nations: China and the Pacific Island countries emphasized treating each other as equals, regardless of size. Both sides reaffirmed support for the one-China principle and mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
- Promoting Common Development: The parties agreed to align China’s Belt and Road Initiative with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. China committed to facilitating the export of high-quality products from Pacific Island countries, sharing its vast market opportunities.
- Upholding Fairness and Justice: Both sides pledged to support multilateralism and protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, using the upcoming 80th anniversary of the United Nations as a platform for joint advocacy.
- Embracing Openness and Inclusivity: The consensus emphasized respecting the autonomy of Pacific Island countries in choosing development partners. Priority will be given to urgent issues like climate change, economic growth, and improving livelihoods.
- Enhancing Cultural Exchanges: Recognizing the value of both Chinese civilization and the unique maritime cultures of the Pacific Islands, the parties agreed to deepen exchanges in education, culture, and media. Together, they aim to promote the advancement of human civilization through initiatives like the Global Civilization Initiative.
The meeting underscored the commitment of China and the Pacific Island countries to work collaboratively for mutual benefit and to address shared challenges in an ever-changing global landscape.
