China and Solomon Islands Pledge to Strengthen Ties and Uphold Multilateralism

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the Solomon Islands’ Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Peter Shanel Agovaka, on Wednesday in Xiamen. The two leaders pledged to strengthen their countries’ ties and work together to uphold multilateralism.

Agovaka was in Xiamen attending the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Over the past five years, since establishing diplomatic relations, China and the Solomon Islands have seen significant growth in their relationship, marked by deepened political trust and fruitful cooperation.

“The establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries has been a correct choice that aligns with the times and serves the fundamental and long-term interests of our peoples,” said Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. “China is willing to work with the Solomon Islands to uphold multilateralism, international norms, and justice.”

Wang Yi expressed appreciation for the Solomon Islands’ firm adherence to the one-China principle and affirmed China’s commitment to supporting the Solomon Islands’ economic and social development. He called for strengthening trade and cultural ties to achieve more practical results that benefit the people of the Solomon Islands.

Agovaka stated that the Solomon Islands will stand firmly with China and jointly oppose unilateralism and protectionism. He reaffirmed the Solomon Islands’ adherence to the one-China principle and expressed enthusiasm for enhancing practical cooperation with China in fields such as education, law enforcement, healthcare, and cultural preservation.

“We look forward to deepening our partnership with China and working together for mutual benefits,” Agovaka said.

The meeting underscores the growing cooperation between China and Pacific Island countries, highlighting the importance of multilateral efforts in addressing global challenges.
