Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on nations worldwide to unite in the fight against climate change. Speaking on Wednesday in Xiamen, southeast China’s Fujian Province, Wang emphasized the urgent need for global cooperation to address this pressing issue.
At a press conference following the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, co-hosted with Kiribati’s President and Foreign Minister Taneti Maamau, Wang expressed deep regret over the withdrawal of certain major countries from the Paris Agreement. He reaffirmed China’s unwavering commitment to supporting global climate governance and continuing its proactive role regardless of changing circumstances.
“China will remain active in implementing South-South cooperation on climate change,” Wang stated. He highlighted China’s remarkable efforts over the years to assist Pacific Island countries in enhancing their capacity to tackle climate challenges. Wang announced plans to release an initiative aimed at deepening cooperation on climate change and expanding collaboration on sustainable development with these nations.
In a significant move, Wang revealed that China will implement 100 “small and beautiful” projects focused on addressing climate change for Pacific Island countries over the next three years. These initiatives are expected to bolster local efforts and contribute to global environmental sustainability.
“As a progressive, constructive force in the international community, China will stand firmly with its fellow developing countries,” Wang affirmed. “We aim to be a trustworthy, reliable, warm-hearted friend to the countries in the Global South, including Pacific Island countries.”
