The Chinese mainland has firmly reiterated its stance on the one-China principle following remarks by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te, who compared reunification across the Taiwan Strait to a “corporate merger” between a “larger company” and a “smaller company.”
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated on Wednesday that China’s sovereignty and territory have never been divided, emphasizing that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China, a fact that has remained unchanged.
“Achieving national reunification is a shared aspiration of Chinese compatriots and a righteous cause of the Chinese nation,” Chen declared, highlighting the mainland’s commitment to upholding the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus.
Expressing openness to dialogue, Chen said, “We are willing to have extensive exchanges of views and in-depth consultations with all political parties, groups, and people from various sectors in Taiwan on cross-strait relations and national reunification.”
Lai’s analogy has sparked discussions about the future of cross-strait ties. The mainland’s reaffirmation underscores the ongoing importance of the one-China principle in shaping relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.
