China and Micronesia Pledge to Deepen Strategic Partnership

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Lorin S. Robert, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), in Xiamen on Thursday. The two leaders promised to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between their countries, aiming to bring tangible benefits to their people.

Robert was in China to attend the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Wang Yi highlighted the success of the meeting, noting that the joint statement issued would inject fresh momentum into the relationships between China and Pacific Island nations.

“Since establishing diplomatic ties, China and Micronesia have seen steady progress in our relationship,” Wang said. “Our cooperation has brought real benefits to the people of Micronesia.”

A significant milestone in bilateral ties was marked by the handover of the China-assisted FSM National Convention Center. The center symbolizes the growing friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

Wang Yi expressed China’s readiness to work with Micronesia on the Belt and Road Initiative, proposing expanded cooperation in infrastructure, climate change response, and marine scientific research. He also urged for deeper exchanges in education, youth programs, and local governance.

Robert praised the fruitful and respectful cooperation between Micronesia and China. He acknowledged China’s vital support for his country’s development, highlighting the National Convention Center as a testament to their strengthening relationship.

“China is not only a close development partner but also a global leader championing sustainable development and fairness for the Global South,” Robert said.

He reaffirmed Micronesia’s commitment to the one-China principle, affirming that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. The FSM Congress recently passed a resolution reaffirming this stance.

Looking ahead, Robert stated that Micronesia is committed to further strengthening its comprehensive strategic partnership with China.
