Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Vanuatu’s Foreign Minister Marc Ati on Thursday in Xiamen, marking a significant step forward in the relationship between the two nations.
The meeting, held during the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, focused on strengthening ties and boosting cooperation. Wang Yi highlighted the flourishing comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Vanuatu, noting that collaboration in various fields has brought tangible benefits to both countries.
“Our partnership sets a model of mutual respect, solidarity, and cooperation for developing countries,” Wang Yi said.
He welcomed Vanuatu’s commitment to friendly relations since its new government took office in February, emphasizing that this approach serves the fundamental interests of Vanuatu and has widespread support.
Building a Prosperous Future Together
Wang Yi called on both nations to seize the momentum by enhancing high-level exchanges and expanding practical cooperation. China is eager to see more high-quality products from Vanuatu in the Chinese market and will continue to encourage Chinese businesses to invest in Vanuatu.
He expressed hope that negotiations on a bilateral free trade agreement could begin soon, which could open up new opportunities for trade and development.
“Pacific Island countries are independent and sovereign nations,” Wang Yi stated. “They have the right to independently choose their development paths and cooperation partners. They are no one’s backyard.”
He emphasized that the South Pacific should be a platform for international cooperation, not a stage for geopolitical rivalry. China firmly supports Vanuatu’s independence and autonomy, standing with Vanuatu in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and development interests.
Vanuatu’s Commitment to Collaboration
Marc Ati affirmed that China is a key development partner for Vanuatu. He expressed gratitude for China’s longstanding support, which has improved the livelihoods of the Vanuatu people and strengthened the country’s confidence in its growth.
Reaffirming Vanuatu’s firm commitment to the one-China policy, Ati expressed willingness to deepen the alignment of their development strategies, accelerate free trade agreement talks, and expand cooperation in education, infrastructure, health, and policing.
“We look forward to elevating our comprehensive strategic partnership with China to new heights and building a more prosperous future together,” Ati said.
The meeting signals a promising future for China-Vanuatu relations, highlighting the potential for increased collaboration and shared prosperity.
