The Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting concluded in Xiamen, Fujian Province, bringing together leaders to strengthen bonds and chart a path toward shared prosperity.
As a key side event, the “China-Pacific Island Countries Dialogue: Pacific Partnerships for Prosperity” saw diplomats from Niue, the Federated States of Micronesia, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji engage in meaningful discussions with Chinese counterparts.
Dalton Tagelagi, Niue’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, highlighted the 50-year relationship between Niue and China, emphasizing mutual understanding and respect. He reaffirmed Niue’s support for the one-China principle.
Lorin Robert, Foreign Secretary of the Federated States of Micronesia, described the comprehensive strategic partnership with China as mature. He expressed willingness to enhance cooperation in areas such as mutual sovereignty respect, sustainable development and climate action, people-to-people exchanges, trade, and diplomatic alignment through dialogue.
Vanuatu’s Foreign Minister, Marc Ati, praised China’s vision of building a community with a shared future for Pacific Island countries. He expressed hopes for expanded cooperation in infrastructure, health, agriculture, climate change, and trade.
Justin Tkatchenko, Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister, affirmed China’s positive role in his country’s development. He highlighted active participation in the Belt and Road Initiative and aims for a closer partnership with China.
Lenora Qereqeretabua, Fiji’s Assistant Foreign Minister, spoke of the deep understanding between Fiji and China, emphasizing mutual appreciation of national identity, culture, and traditions.
Discussions also addressed topics like poverty alleviation and education. Tkatchenko spotlighted an agricultural project proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, noting the success of Juncao cultivation in opening markets for local farmers. He underscored the historical bonds since World War II and mentioned the “China-Papua New Guinea Friendship School,” which trains over 3,000 students annually, fostering young talent.
At the dialogue’s conclusion, all parties expressed optimism and a strong commitment to deepening ties with China, fostering a future of shared prosperity and development.
