China is stepping up its efforts to promote peace across Asia. On Thursday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Surakiart Sathirathai, the chairman of the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council (APRC) and former Thai deputy prime minister, in China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Their meeting was part of the signing ceremony for the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed), a new initiative launched by China. This organization aims to offer countries a fresh, voluntary way to resolve disputes and promote reconciliation.
Wang Yi emphasized that the IOMed is a significant step toward supporting multilateralism and upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter. He stated that China is eager to work with other Asian countries using regional platforms like China-ASEAN, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Lancang-Mekong Cooperation, and the Asia Cooperation Dialogue. Together, they hope to protect the precious peace and stability that Asia enjoys.
Surakiart shared his excitement about the birth of the IOMed, calling it a timely initiative given the current global situation. He expressed the APRC’s desire to collaborate more closely with China to make greater contributions to peace and development throughout Asia.
