China has called on the United States to halt its planned arms sales to the Taiwan region, emphasizing the importance of the one-China principle in their bilateral relations.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated, “The Taiwan question represents the core of China’s core interests and constitutes the first and foremost red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations.”
Lin’s remarks came after media reports suggested that the U.S. intends to increase weapons sales to the Taiwan region. China firmly opposes any form of military support to Taiwan, Lin emphasized.
“We urge the U.S. to strictly abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiques, particularly the August 17 Communique,” Lin said. “The U.S. should cease arms sales to Taiwan and refrain from creating factors that escalate tensions across the Taiwan Strait.”
Lin reiterated China’s unwavering resolve to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling on the U.S. to work towards maintaining peace and stability in the region.
