Beijing Exhibition Unveils the World of Baba-Nyonya Culture

A captivating new exhibition titled “Exploring the World of Baba-Nyonya: A Peranakan Culture Exhibition on the Maritime Silk Road” has opened at the Capital Museum in Beijing. Showcasing 132 exquisite artifacts, the exhibition delves into the rich heritage of the Baba-Nyonya community, a unique culture born from the intermarriage of early Chinese immigrants and local populations in Southeast Asia.

Visitors are invited to journey through multimedia installations and meticulously recreated scenes that trace the history, religion, customs, and artistry of the Baba-Nyonya people. The exhibition highlights how the blending of Chinese and Southeast Asian traditions gave rise to a vibrant and distinctive culture that continues to fascinate the world.

The event is a collaborative effort between the Capital Museum and Singapore’s National Heritage Board, with valuable cultural relics provided by the Asian Civilisations Museum and the Peranakan Museum. This international partnership underscores the shared history and enduring connections along the Maritime Silk Road.

Open to the public until August 17th, the exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the lives and legacy of the Baba-Nyonya community, inviting a new generation to appreciate the beauty of cultural diversity and exchange.
