Singaporean Minister Resolving Taiwan Question Up to Chinese People

Singapore’s Defense Minister: Taiwan’s Future Should Be Decided by Chinese People

Singaporean Defense Minister Chan Chun Sing has emphasized that the resolution of the Taiwan question should be determined by the Chinese people themselves. Speaking on Sunday at the closing session of the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue, a key security summit held in Singapore, Chan highlighted the importance of understanding the historical context surrounding the issue.

“How this issue is going to be resolved, if not managed, will have to be determined by the Chinese people,” Chan stated, underscoring the need for nuanced discussions. He cautioned against oversimplifying the situation by framing it as “a conflict between democracy and autocracy” or drawing parallels with the conflict in Ukraine. Such comparisons, he admitted, are concerning.

Chan’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in the region, with various stakeholders expressing differing views on the future of the Taiwan region. His comments reflect Singapore’s stance on encouraging peaceful dialogue and respecting the perspectives of those directly involved.

“Our region’s stability hinges on our ability to appreciate the complexities of such issues,” Chan added. “Simplistic explanations do not contribute to constructive solutions; they only heighten misunderstandings.”

The Shangri-La Dialogue provides a platform for defense ministers, military chiefs, and top officials from Asia and beyond to discuss pressing security challenges. Chan’s appeal for a deeper understanding of the Taiwan question resonates with the forum’s goal of fostering open communication among nations.
