Haikou, Hainan — The 2025 “Haikou Cup” International Dragon Boat Invitational wrapped up with a splash this weekend, leaving excitement in its wake and boosting the local economy. Nearly 40 teams from around the globe, including competitors from Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, converged on Haikou’s shimmering waterways for the thrilling two-day event.

The competition drew an impressive 219,000 spectators who lined the banks to cheer on their favorite teams amidst the rhythmic beating of drums and the vibrant display of traditional dragon boats. The influx of visitors not only created a festive atmosphere but also gave a significant boost to Haikou’s tourism and consumption sectors.

Local businesses reported a surge in activity, with hotels, restaurants, and shops bustling with guests eager to experience the rich culture and hospitality of Hainan’s capital city. Many young people took to social media to share their experiences, amplifying the city’s appeal as a must-visit destination.

“This was my first time attending the dragon boat races, and it was absolutely electrifying,” said Li Wei, a university student from Guangzhou. “The energy was contagious, and it was amazing to see so many people from different countries coming together.”
