China Opposes Eu Ban on Medical Device Firms

China Criticizes EU Ban on Its Medical Device Firms

China’s Ministry of Commerce has voiced strong opposition to the European Union’s decision to restrict Chinese medical device manufacturers from participating in public procurement tenders exceeding 5 million euros (approximately $5.7 million) over the next five years.

The move, reportedly enacted under the EU’s International Procurement Instrument, has drawn criticism from Beijing. A spokesperson for the ministry described the decision as discriminatory and detrimental to Chinese businesses.

“This unilateral measure distorts fair competition and creates new trade barriers,” the spokesperson stated. “China firmly opposes such protectionist practices.”

The spokesperson emphasized the importance of major economies upholding World Trade Organization rules, especially amid global economic challenges. “At a time when the international economic order is being undermined by unilateralism and protectionism, it’s crucial for major players like China and the EU to adhere to principles of fairness, transparency, and non-discrimination,” they added.

China has urged the EU to reconsider its stance. “We urge the EU to correct its wrong approach,” the spokesperson said, highlighting that China will monitor the situation closely and take necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.
