China Records Over 650 Million Holiday Trips During Dragon Boat Festival

During this year’s Dragon Boat Festival holiday, China witnessed a staggering 653.7 million inter-regional passenger trips, according to data released by the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday. This figure marks a 2.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

The three-day holiday, celebrated from May 31 to June 2, saw road transport dominating the travel scene with over 597.32 million trips made by road. Railway journeys accounted for 48.03 million trips, while waterways handled 2.73 million passengers. Airlines also experienced significant traffic, with 5.63 million passenger trips recorded during the festival.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, is a traditional holiday rooted in legend and tradition, featuring dragon boat races and the eating of zongzi, a type of sticky rice dumpling. The holiday is one of China’s most significant festivals, prompting millions to travel across the country to celebrate with family and participate in cultural activities.

This year’s increase in travel reflects not only the continued importance of the festival but also the growing mobility of China’s population. Authorities implemented measures to ensure safe and efficient transportation during the peak travel period.
