Taklimakan Rally: International Racers Celebrate Xinjiang’s Epic Off-Road Adventure

The 2025 Taklimakan Rally concluded over the weekend in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, marking another successful year for Asia’s longest and most challenging off-road race. Since its inception in 2005, the rally has grown into a prestigious event that not only tests the limits of its participants but also showcases the vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes of Xinjiang.

International racers from around the globe expressed their admiration for both the competition and their experiences in the region. Martin Michek, a Czech rider from the Hoto Factory Racing Team who took first place in the motorcycle category, was particularly impressed by the warmth and hospitality of the local people.

“I think it’s really nice; everybody is helpful,” Michek shared. “Even when you’re away from the bivouac or the paddock, everyone is smiling. It’s a bit surprising because I don’t think many Europeans come to this area. But I’m really happy to be here and enjoy my time because the people are so welcoming.”

Aliyyah Koloc, a 20-year-old rising star from the Buggyra Racing Team, was amazed by the dramatic scenery along the rally’s route. “The landscape we passed through, especially in Stage 3, was really beautiful—through the rocks and rivers,” Koloc said. “I’ve never seen any landscape like this before. Everyone was really passionate about the rally, and the support here has been really cool. Even though there’s been a bit of a language barrier, I’m happy to be here in China and meet the locals.”

Ian Davies, the British engineering director of the Wuhai Speedrush Club, noted that his positive experiences in China have inspired his friends to consider traveling to the country. “I love China. I look forward to coming back here. The people are very friendly, and I find it a fun place,” Davies said. “People outside the country get impressions from their news media, but I find China very exciting and interesting. I’ve gone back and told all my friends how good and exciting China is, and several of them have actually changed their travel plans to include China.”

As the Taklimakan Rally wrapped up, its impact extended far beyond the finish line. The demanding routes and genuine cross-cultural encounters have not only pushed participants to their limits but also highlighted Xinjiang’s spectacular nature and vibrant spirit to a global audience.
